San Vito Lo Capo

San Vito Lo Capo is charming town and area on the North West corner tip forming peninsula of the island of Sicily. The underwater scenery and marine life has potential to surprise you with variety in typography and wildlife spotting, not forgetting wrecks.
There are numerous dive sites around the area on both East and West side of the peninsula within Zingaro Nature reserve area.
You can anchor in the bay just in front of the town in San Vito lo Capo. You also find an option to moor your boat into a dockage in marina on the west side of the bay.
Please note anchoring is strictly prohibited in the Nature reserve area. Most dive sites on the East side of the peninsula are only reachable with a powerful dinghy and stand by person.

We did these next mentioned two dives on the West side of the Peninsula from 40ft monohull, and 2.5 hp dinghy in October. Water temperature was around 25 C°, visibility around 20 metres.

Punta Negra

38°09.547’N 12°43.333’E

Anchor:
Closest over night anchoring spot is in Iso Lidda. Stunning spot overlooking amazing mountain view for both sunsets and sunrises. A little out of the town, however the walk is beautiful and doable.
Slightly rocky bottom, check your anchor holding and aim for the sandier bits of the bottom
Good holding 6-7 metres depth, shelter from S.E winds, often W swell

Dinghy:
Ride 1 Nm North of Iso Lidda Bay. There are mooring balls for use. Small dinghies easy access, Dinghies only. There are a few other dive moorings just a little more north from Punta Negra!

Dive:
Rocks, seagrass, cliffs and canyons, dive site spreads out from the dropping of the divers. Slow descend to 13 metres from the mooring ball, heading to W, N/W and eventually to N N/E and making a loop through some soft corals and rock formations. Eventually you loop back to the walls, swim towards the mooring keeping the wall on your right hand side.
We saw day octopus, schools of fish, many scorpionfish, red coral, sea grass and eels.

Anchorage in Iso Lidda, Mount Cofano on the backround.

Scialandro

38°06,927’N 12°41.145’E

Anchor:
You can stay in Iso Lidda, but closer point to drop your anchor is South of the bay of Scialandro, which is on the foot of Mount Cofano. Rocks, Seaweed, a few sandy patches, which you’ll want to keep an eye on to drop on.
When approaching, be aware of the rocks on the North of the cape in between the cape and the dive site. Anchor approx 10 metres depth, you’ll need bit of chain down, check your anchor for holding! Lots of rocking and rolling caused by the N swell. Overnight stay not recommended, only on good weather window. If you’re using compressor that is petrol fuelled, make sure you fill your tanks before headed to the dive site. We found the place too rolly to operate compressor.

Dinghy:
You will see the sticking rock or waves crashing to it from the anchorage. Dinghy ride can get bumpy at times depending of the swell. There is no mooring, you will need to use a small anchor, or leave a person to hover on a surface. If using an anchor, make sure to check where you are dropping it and secure it if possible.

Dive:
You can dive around the rock. The deep part is on the N/E about 30 meters. Shallows mainly in the S/W 10 meters.
Shallows with coral, seaweed, slopes with pebble bottom. N, N/E has a steep cliff that turns back into a slope. Make sure to not surface here as it is where the water breaks.
We saw many moray eels, big schools of fish, sea stars and nudibranchs.
